One employer which saw huge benefits from offering work placement opportunities to students was United Carpets, based on Barnby Dunn Road in Doncaster.  The well-known carpet retailer took Adam Buxton from Ridgewood School on work placement back in January.

Joanne Horgan, Director of United Carpets, said: “We were delighted with how well Adam settled into becoming part of the team.  After seeing how he performed on the sales floor, I immediately offered him a Saturday job and he is now working with us every weekend and is doing really well.  Adam put so much effort into his placement and we never expected that we would be able to offer a student an opportunity like this, but it has proved to us the value of work placement, especially when you get candidates of his calibre.  He is now a popular member of the team, with both staff and customers alike.”

From the students side, another pupil who benefited enormously from her recent work placement is a Yr10 pupil from Hall Cross School called Sophie.  Sophie had started missing lessons and was slipping behind in her studies.  At the end of June, she was encouraged to go on
work placement, which she spent as a motor mechanic with Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.  Sophie from Hall Cross School explains: “It really inspired me to work harder when I went on work placement.  I got so much out of it and now I know that being a motor mechanic is what I really want to do.  After my work placement, I went back to work there full time in the Summer holidays, which was brilliant.  Since being back at school, my grades have improved and now I’m really focused on starting as an apprentice motor mechanic when I finish my studies later this year.”

Fran Bevan-Eyles continues: “Sophie’s placement is typical of so many students who go out on work placement and it really gives their lives and future careers some direction.  As well as being beneficial to students, it also gives organisations the chance to work with potential employees of the future and encourage more students to consider these career sectors.”

Business & Education South Yorkshire can provide guidance on the types of projects which the learner may be able to undertake effectively whilst on a work placement. This makes it a more rewarding placement for the student and even more productive for host companies.
